Use Extreme Caution When Driving Nyack Roads This Month
I feel it is important to reprint this warning from last year after witnessing a car/deer collision in Valley Cottage yesterday. Drivers should exercise extreme caution when navigating Nyack roads during the month of November. It is the breeding season of the whitetail deer. With only one month to propagate the species, bucks run amok, often losing 25% of their body weight following the this breeding frenzy. They also use their sharp antlers to challenge rival bucks for the right to mate, sometimes fighting to the death, but more often just to domination. They chase females day and night, with the goal of impregnating as many as possible in this small window. This rutting behavior involves chasing numerous does until a receptive (ovulating) mate is found. It’s this chasing that drives deer into the streets and in front of our cars. Moose are also increasing their numbers in NY with one being hit in Westchester County last year.
There are 65,000 deer/car accidents in New York yearly. Almost half of them occur in the month of November. Deer collisions cause approximately 200 deaths nationwide each year with an estimated cost of $4 Billion in insurance payouts.
As a driver, be alert any time you near a wooded area. Don’t tailgate and don’t speed!!! Also watch for the following buck if an antlerless doe crosses in front of your car. Let’s be safe out there.
